Position Summary

The Center for African and African American Studies is searching for an Associate Director to work with the Director of the Center, Administrator and affiliated faculty.

The ideal candidate will have a master’s degree or the equivalent in the humanities, social sciences, or a related field, administrative experience, training and/or experience in project management, and familiarity with grant-writing in the humanities.

This position is benefits-eligible, exempt, and has an expected minimum salary of $80,000 (dependent on experience and qualifications).

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Three years of related experience

  • Excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal, collaborative and negotiation skills, ability to work in a team.
  • Demonstrated research experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in project, program, and event management.
  • Diplomacy, relationship building, and problem-solving skills in a variety of situations.
  • Ability to develop complex and / or multiple program partnerships and funding sources.
  • Excellent proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other business support resources, such as Zoom.
  • Demonstrated capacity for strategic initiatives.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent data analysis skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team to meet expected deadlines and schedules
  • Ability to lead and motivate others.

Preferences

  • Master’s degree, terminal degree, or graduate training in a humanities, social sciences or related discipline
  • Experience in a university setting or granting agency.
  • Training in the Humanities or Social Sciences or related fields
  • Professional experience in complex project management with successful outcomes
  • Experience working successfully in an interdisciplinary setting with multiple units.

Essential Functions

  • Implements and administers the vision, strategy and goals of the CAAAS.
  • Participates in strategic development and long-range planning with the aim of generating infrastructural and intellectual resources.
  • Liaises with internal and external partners, building and managing relationships within the community at Rice and beyond.
  • Provides guidance to faculty and students.
  • Maintains an archive of CAAAS projects.
  • Oversees the operations, administration and evaluation of CAAAS supported programs.
  • Develops and implements strategies related to outreach, events, communications, development, partnerships and fundraising / funding.
  • May be responsible for grant preparation and submission or research administration.
  • Completes other duties as needed or assigned.

Additional Functions

Assist director in evaluating office staff, including student employees.
